The Dust Bowl
The dust bowl took place on the South plains. The South plains were producing large amounts wheat. Everything was economically stable , and they were growing. After several months, rain slowly began to stop dropping and the heat kept increasing. The lack of water, and the desert like area failed to provide what everyone needed. Eventually there was large amounts of dust in the air and It became hard to breathe in and almost impossible to move around in. Farmers had no more healthy fields, “100 million acres of the plains were becoming a wasteland.” Fields were being ruined which led to no food or source of income. This was considered the dust bowl. No one imagined that this disaster would last a decade. The number of dust storms were increasing yearly and were getting more powerful. People attempted to hang wet clothes outside the windows in order to prevent the dust from coming inside. Yet this did not do much, the wet clothes weren’t enough to stop dust from invading homes. Eventually people began to notice the origin of the storm. They were able to determine where the dust came from. When they thought things were at their worst, in 1935 jack rabbits began to migrate into the area and devoured their surroundings. This was an unexpected event that they did not know how to handle. People had to begin to trap and kill them in order to prevent them from taking what little they had left. This became a very common routine. Men would beat the jackrabbits to death in traps that they had created.
There was a mass exodus from the plains. A quarter of the population fled the region. Families left in order to try to find new farming jobs in California. It became difficult to keep businesses or any type of opportunities open. Because of this, many businesses, schools, and banks shut down because of the abandonment of the plains. People had lost hope and seemed like there hard times would never be over. In order to start a new beginning, people made the choice to leave their homes in search of better opportunities. Yet many men still had hope that the rain would pour and conditions would get better. Some stuck through it knowing that their better days were yet to come. For all the farmers who stayed behind, Hugh Hammond Bennett attempted to give them new perspectives on their farming techniques. Bennett was a soil conservationist. They encouraged farmers of the southern plains to attempt new ways to plant plants.
Black Sunday April 14, 1935 was a horrifying day for the people. Dark clouds approached the plains, and hovered over them. They were dark, heavy dust clouds that seemed to get closer every minute. Many believed that it was the end of the world. Families tried to flee the roads and go to safe areas where they could hide. It was a very dark time for people and eventually the people began to suffer from severe illnesses. The only way to calm it was by home remedies because they were very poor, and had no other sources to depend on. One third of the deaths resulted from pneumonia. Children were severely affected with illnesses more than adults were and had nearly no hope to survive these hard times.
After years of depression the president created many government based programs in order to help, and feed the people suffering in the dust bowl. Franklin D. Roosevelt created the New Deal. The new deal contained many programs in which the government helped the people. WPA was one of the programs created. this was a work-relief program that would help millions of families find employment. Both men and women were employed. Of course at this time men were more employed and took on jobs such as building roads, bridges, parks etc. The women who were fortunate to work took on caring for the elderly, sewing, nurse programs etc.
The dust bowl left thousand of families homeless, unemployed, and hungry. This period was one of the hardest times to surpass in American history. Although many made the choice to flee the area, many also stayed. Taking on the challenges that they would face for years. This was a hard yet inspirational time to never give up.

Oppositions of the war
By: Alexis Gonzalez
Although many groups and both nations opposed the war, it was a necessary battle in order to declare Cuban independence from their spanish oppressors. Preparations were made by both sides in order to be cautious of potential battle. The U.S trained a very small but powerful navy. Yet, U.S had the advantage because Cuba consisted of a large but very poorly maintained army. Spain had troops stationed in cuba and the philippines but were weak compared to the U.S navy. The spanish were opposed to giving up cuban freedom. They believed that “God had granted Spain its empire, of which Cuba was a principal remaining area...”Those opposed attempted to keep total control of Cuba. William Mckinley demanded independence for Cuba, but there was much refusal. This led to the opposition of several political groups. As for America, they became very supportive, and sympathized for Cuba. America attempted to take cuba out of their struggle. Even though Mckinley was opposed to the war, he decided to go forth with it. Taking action was the only way that things would get settled between the them and the spanish.”Mckinley authorized a modest army expedition to conduct land operations against Manila, a step in keeping with the desire to maintain constant pressure on spain in the hope of forcing an early end to the war.” Pressure, and determination is what the navy used in order to prove to spain that they were determined.
There was no big influences that came from anti-war believers. Even though they wanted no part of it, they had no way to prevent it.Once Cuba was freed from the spanish authorities, they were very relieved.Cuba had fought a three year war previous to the spanish american war. The fought against the Spaniards for their independence but did not accomplish it. They thought that without the U.S support, they would not have granted their freedom. Many anti- war groups were upset. They thought that the U.S took action that was not governed properly, and that many american rules, regulations and principles were not followed. People grew upset, but were not powerful enough to make a difference. Many believed that the United States was being shifted away from certain qualities within the republican government.
In the late 1800’s the Anti-imperialist League was created in order to prevent American expansion and imperialism. The concern was that America would lose their principles if imperialism was followed. Bradford was the lead of their committee .Yet the group was not resistant enough to follow through. Many people voted against the committee because different political views were being put into place. Many more committees were formed throughout the period. Yet they were all very weak. It became for groups to maintain any sort of control because their opinions made no difference. The war took place even though they were against it.

Dead Zones
Many dead zones surround our earth. Yet many people are unaware of what a dead zones are and what they do. A dead Zone is a hypoxic body of water in the ocean that is due to pollution. It’s caused by many chemical nutrients contained in the water. This is also known as eutrophication. It’s a way of how the ecosystem responds to the different substances added into the ocean.
Dead Zones occur mainly near where there is industrial and agricultural activity spills. The formation of a dead zone may occur naturally but human activity is a huge part in the growth of it. Weather is another factor that contributes to growth of dead zones. The ecosystem and society are extremely affected by dead zones. Fish living in these waters were found to have smaller reproductive organs. Other creatures also including fish that could not escape the dead zone eventually die, or begin to show strange symptoms of growth. Society is affected as well. People who depend on these fish for the market are suffering. With all their food dying they have no way of selling.
There are varieties of ways to control and eventually eliminate dead zones. Chemicals such as nitrogen and also sewage should try to be reduced from ending up in our rivers that eventually end up in our oceans. RCC is a big part of the way things end up in the ocean. It is a constant interaction with the bank which moves from source to mouth. and is constantly changing. It is the responsibility of the people to want to change our ways in order to change our oceans.

US History
Listening to the song “US History” by Flipsyde is an excellent way to learn more about the history of our country. The song deals with different eras of U.S. history such as early U.S. history, the U.S. involvement in World War I and World War II, and more contemporary U.S. history. If more songs were as well thought out and educational as this one, more young people might know more about U.S. history.
The song starts talking about how the U.S. started as a country. I talks about the Revolutionary War in 1776. The Revolutionary War was when America went to war with Britain to become an independent country. The U.S. was involved in slavery trade in the 1700s and the 1800s. The north didn't want there to be slaves anymore but the south did not want to change, so they went to war and that was was called the Civil War. This all happened in the early centuries that the U.S. was a country.
The U.S. was involved in both World Wars. World War I was in 1914. This war started because of entangled alliances. World War I was the first modern war after the Industrial Revolution. They had machine guns and they started trench warfare. World War II started similar, a couple decades later. In this war the atom bomb was invented. They dropped the bomb in two cities in Japan, in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After they saw how powerful the bomb was the war ended. Both of these wars were very big and brutal.
In the last part of the song it talks about the Soviet Union, Vietnam War and Afghanistan. Russia and the U.S. both had a lot of weapons. Russia supported the North and the U.S. supported south Vietnam, the U.S. and vietnam went to war. There was a lot of oil in the middle east and the U.S. wanted in on it.The U.S. became allies with Israel and Iraq, and gave Iraq guns and money to go against Russia. Iraq turned on the U.S., and they went to war.
This song “US History” talks about very important times in our country. How the U.S. became its own country. Major wars it went through because of its allies. Also the most recent history of our country. This song is very educational and it is a great way to learn about history, because our countries history is very important.
