Catcher In The Rye
In the book Catcher In The Rye written by J.D. Salinger, the main character Holden Caulfield is trying to identify his role in society. He neglects the fact that he is growing up and refuses to accept the reality of getting older and the responsibilities that come with it. He goes through several stages of confusion and growth throughout the novel. Holden is struggling to hold on to his adolescence.
In the book, Holden has an impression that all adults are “phonies” and that the adult world is nothing but phoniness. He believes that when people come together, their identities and personalities change in order to fit into society's expectations. He decides to distance himself from others. Holden wants to rebel against society's labels and doesn't mind not fitting in. There is no time for phonies because Holden is at a point in his life where honesty is all he has to offer. “People are always ruining things for you” said holden. He believes that the world is surrounded by hypocrites who corrupt the world .
Holden’s sister phoebe is a very interesting character. She's smarter than most adults but has the soul of a child. Holden loves phoebe and see’s the pureness in her. Phoebe is just like Holden when he was younger, therefore he wants to protect her from many things, such as growing up. Although Holden must become an adult, he can still feel like a child around her. Thats why she makes Holden so happy. This is a way in which Holden attempts to hold on to his adolescence.
Holden goes through a transition from adolescence to adulthood. He is trying to identify his purpose in life, yet he can’t seem to find any type of motivation. Holden’s attitude towards situations are always very childish. When he fails to accomplish his responsibilities, he always seems to make a joke, and blow it off. An example is when Holden was responsible for the fencing teams equipment. Once the team found out that he had lost it, he took the childish way out by blaming everyone, and everything around him. He became very immature.
Although Holden is a very misunderstood person, he showed many character identifications. As the reader, you watch holden struggle through his teenage years. He is a very relatable character because people must go through this transition in life. The book Catcher In The Rye, helps teenagers to understand that changes are coming. There will be a point in life that you will feel lonely, misunderstood, and deny growing up.
